REFLECTIONS: Highly Polished Stainless Steel
Sculptures by California artist James T. Russell opened May 15, 2011 where the public had the
opportunity of meeting the artist
at Saper Galleries, 433 Albert Avenue in downtown East Lansing,
Michigan. The artist
gave a presentation to the community showing how he
designs, fabricates, polishes and installs his monumental
sculptures. (See

 From Motorola's headquarters in Beijing to the Bellagio and other hotels in Las Vegas, James T. Russell has been awarded dozens of special commissions to design and fabricate highly polished monumental stainless steel sculptures for public squares, hospitals, airports, libraries, universities, and corporations, among others. In Lansing, Michigan his 20-foot tall Inspiration was unveiled Sunday, May 15 behind the Lansing City Market on the bank of the Grand River. After the unveiling the artist visited with the public
at Saper Galleries where Gallery owner Roy C. Saper has installed a
selection of Russell's smaller size polished stainless steel sculptures
intended for homes and offices. Like his monumental sculptures
the
sculptures at the Saper Galleries exhibition are like ribbons of shaped
polished steel curving around like a mobius strip floating in air
stopped in a fixed pose that changes, in some cases dramatically, as
one moves around the artwork.
 "I've have known of Russell's extraordinarily
high-quality designs and fabricated sculptures for many years", noted
Saper. "Russell regularly wins competitions for public art
programs
throughout the country. Lansing's Sesquicentennial Committee
chose
well in selecting Russell (and his flawless experience in creating
super large sculptures) and commissioning him to create the Lansing
Sesquicentennial 'Inspiration'." Saper noted that two other
significant public works of art are also of highly polished stainless
steel: Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate,
the bean-shaped sculpture
at Millennium Park in
Chicago, and the St. Louis Arch.
Russell's smaller stainless steel sculptures at
the Saper Galleries exhibition also reflect the environment
in which
they are installed as the highly polished surfaces act like mirrors to
the surrounding spaces.
Russell received his Masters of Fine Art degree
in Monumental Sculpture at California State University at Long Beach
and makes his home in Lomita, California.

downtown East Lansing, its exhibition REFLECTIONS:

2011 although several of the limited edition sculptures remain on

The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Saturdays 10am to 6pm and Thursdays 10am to 9pm. The Gallery is also open the First Sunday Monthly from 1 to 4pm. |
