Click on any of the
photos below that I took of the miniature Persian paintings and you
will see the
magnified single-hair brush detail that makes these paintings
absolutely remarkable!

When my
son, Jay, and I met the Persian artists in New York we were
stunned with the absolute quality and extraordinary, fine detail of
their miniature paintings.
What adds to their desirability is they are small. Really
small. As in smaller than a business card. Plus, the
artists prefer to use natural materials so they are painted on camel
bone using cat hair brushes, the handles for which are made of
porcupine
quill. The paint colors are natural dies extracted from herbs and
minerals like lapis lazuli, turquoise, saffron, pomegranate skin, and
walnuts. The Persians were clearly "green" before it became vogue!
These paintings were created by Ali and his father Mostafa Fotowat and
others under their supervision.
Mostafa has 40 years experience painting miniatures and comes
from a family of miniature painting artists. The Iranian
government selected him to create paintings that were used for national
postage stamps in his native Iran. Mostafa's father, Hossein, and
his brother, Rassoul, are also noteworthy Persian miniature painters.
It is our pleasure to share with North America and the world, the
Persian miniature paintings on camel bone by the Fotowat family.
I hope you enjoy them as much as Jay and I did when we first saw and
selected this collection for Saper
Galleries. ~ Roy Saper
